This is the birthday cake, bake-sale cake and "we need a cake by tonight" cake. The batter is very thin, which is exactly right: the hot liquid blooms the cocoa and gives a deep chocolate flavor and a moist crumb.
Coffee or water?
Hot coffee deepens the chocolate without tasting like coffee. Hot water works perfectly well if you prefer.

Ingredients
Method
Heat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9x13-inch pan.
In a large bowl, whisk the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
Add the eggs, milk, oil and vanilla and whisk for 2 minutes, until smooth.
Whisk in the hot coffee; the batter will be thin. Pour into the pan.
Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until a toothpick in the center comes out clean. Cool completely, about 1 hour.
For the frosting, beat the butter, then add the cocoa and powdered sugar alternately with the milk until smooth and spreadable. Spread over the cooled cake.
