Baked ziti is the dinner to make on a Sunday and eat twice, or to drop off for a friend. Mixing an egg into the ricotta keeps it creamy instead of grainy.

Add meat if you like

Brown 1 pound of Italian sausage or ground beef to 160°F, drain and stir it into the sauce.

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 375°F. Boil the pasta for 2 minutes less than the package directions and drain.

  2. Mix the ricotta, egg, 1/2 cup Parmesan, Italian seasoning and salt.

  3. Toss the pasta with the marinara. Spread half in a 9x13-inch dish, dot with spoonfuls of the ricotta mixture and scatter with half the mozzarella.

  4. Add the remaining pasta, then the rest of the mozzarella and Parmesan.

  5. Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Uncover and bake for 15 to 20 minutes more, until bubbling and golden.

  6. Rest for 10 minutes before serving so it slices neatly. Top with basil.
