No ice cream? Freeze milk in an ice cube tray. Blended with more cold milk, cocoa and a sweetener, the frozen cubes make a frosty, frothy shake that tastes much richer than plain chocolate milk.

Make it thicker

Add 1/4 cup heavy cream or one frozen banana. Plain ice cubes work in a pinch, but they dilute the flavor.

Method

  1. Freeze 1 cup of milk in an ice cube tray for at least 3 hours.

  2. Blend the cold milk, cocoa, sugar, vanilla and salt first so the cocoa dissolves.

  3. Add the frozen milk cubes (and cream or banana) and blend until thick and frothy, 30 to 45 seconds.

  4. Taste, add more sweetener if needed and serve right away.
