In the air fryer
- It is a starting point. Air fryers vary a lot by size and wattage. Open the basket halfway through to shake, flip and check.
- Cook to temperature. Chicken needs 165°F (74°C) and burgers 160°F (71°C) inside, whatever the clock says.
- One layer. Leave space so the hot air can move. Cook in batches rather than piling food up.
- A little oil helps breaded and starchy foods brown. Avoid aerosol sprays, which can damage nonstick baskets.
Three steps.
- 1Type the oven temperature and time from the recipe.
- 2Say whether the recipe was written for a regular or a fan (convection) oven.
- 3Cook at the new setting, shake or flip halfway, and finish to a safe internal temperature.
Good to know
How do I convert oven time to air fryer time?
A common starting point is to lower the temperature by about 25°F (15°C) and cut the time by about 20 percent, then check halfway. A 400°F, 25-minute oven recipe becomes about 375°F for 20 minutes.
Is an air fryer the same as a convection oven?
It works the same way, with a fan moving hot air, but in a much smaller space, so food usually browns faster. For recipes written for a convection oven, lower the temperature only a little.
Do I need to preheat an air fryer?
Many models heat up in 2 to 3 minutes. Preheating helps crisp foods like fries and breaded chicken brown evenly; check your manual.
